BSFA 1958 Award

The BSFA was founded at the Eastercon in 1958. A number of celebrations of the BSFA's fiftieth anniversary are being planned for 2008 - including programme items at the Eastercon - but one of the ways we wanted to mark this was to give BSFA and Eastercon members the chance to vote on their favourite novel from 1958.

This isn't a true 'retro' award, in that no one is being asked to nominate or vote as if this were 50 years ago; it's an opportunity to recognise the best novel from the year in which the BSFA was formed, from our standpoint 50 years on.

  • The Best Novel of 1958 award is therefore open to any novel-length work of science fiction or fantasy which is published for the first time in 1958. (Serialised novels are eligible, provided that the publication date of the concluding part was in 1958.) Given the state of the SF market at the time, this includes both books and magazines published outside the UK.
